I mostly researched, brainstormed, and edited this past week. I'm going to try to do some more shooting this weekend and have been working on my opening.
I was finally able to pick up a copy of When Money Grew on Trees, about the Outlaw Sheriff of Madison County, Ralph Baker. Hoosh has a framed photo of Baker hanging on his wall and proudly removed it from it's dusty home to show me last time I was there. Hoosh has said that before he came to the U.S., he thought everything would be like a western movie, so it's funny that he ended up in the county most famous for an "outlaw sheriff." I've also been sifting through some old newspapers and some photographs of Madison County at the Special Collections on campus. So far, I've found mostly weed busts and a few nearly-netflix-docuseries-worthy murders, but I'm still looking for something that will help to provide historical context in order to reinforce just how rural Madison County is. One of the greatest things I've found on the internet, however, is the song in this link. It took a lot of sleuthing to find this gem. I reached out to the band members and scheduled interviews with them, so hopefully I'll know the whole story soon. I did some more filming earlier this week and have been editing and writing transcripts as well. I've also scheduled more interviews with neighbors and a trip to Terra Studios (an artist residency and park). I think that it might be important to highlight that this area is politically divided in such extreme ways, yet in such close proximity. I also plan to spend a day at the cafe getting some more spontaneous and informal footage of Hoosh and his customers this weekend.
